Lorenzo Coppini, CEO of B&C Speakers commented: “This
acquisition allows the B&C Group to strengthen its international presence, also
offering the opportunity to relaunch and enhance an iconic American brand. By
joining forces, we can exploit strong synergies, as happened with the
acquisition of Eighteen Sound in 2018. We can offer our customers a broader
range of world-class products and build them where they need them."
Eminence Speaker LLC has a workforce of about 90 employees and operates in the design and manufacture of electro-acoustic transducers for professional use as well as for the musical instruments (MI) market, alarm systems and car audio aftermarket. The company was established in 1966 by Bob Gault and, since the 1990s under the leadership of his son Robert, has established itself as an internationally recognized brand.
Retiring Chairman Rob Gault added, “We have known and respected B&C for around 30 years. When I decided it was time to retire leaving no family members at Eminence, B&C was my first choice as a buyer. It was always my family's goal to leave Eminence in good hands - hands that we were sure would protect the reputation of Eminence, along with its employees, suppliers, and customers long into the future. I'm sure there will be changes at some point, but for now, I expect business to continue more-or-less as usual with Eminence.
“Eminence customers and products are largely complementary to B&C’s current activities. This is a clear case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts." commented Ron Tizzard, CMO of B&C Speakers. “The B&C Group has enjoyed a significant surge in demand in recent years, especially since the end of the global pandemic. With the addition of Eminence to group, we are well positioned to be a more dynamic and cost appropriate supplier for our global customer base."
The integration of Eminence into the group will offer the availability of an additional brand, historically present and deeply rooted in the professional audio market in the United States. Especially in the musical instruments sector where B&C has not been particularly impactful. Eminence has two production facilities, located in Eminence, Kentucky and Dongguan, China. Both are geographical areas where B&C Speakers has been successfully operating commercially for many years.

There is something new for
everyone: We have expanded our line with new ceramic alternatives to popular
mid bass, woofer, and subwoofer products.
New larger voice coils in the
lightweight CL series promise to make those woofers a serious contender for
even very high performance applications. Our first 10” subwoofer (the 10BG76)
is here thanks to a completely redesigned basket and extra large spider - or
choose maximum power handling in a small frame woofer with the 10NDL88. Finally
we’ve reinvented an entire category with the introduction of the industry’s
first 18” tri-axial, a capable subwoofer with our DCX464 coaxial mounted to the
rear and an extensively auditioned, FEA optimized, 400Hz horn to provide
adequate loading and pattern control. The cherry on top of it all is the
DCX354, a new compact version of what we think is the highest output, most
durable, best sounding compression driver available.

Completing the most accurate point source solution available, B&C Speakers is thrilled to announce the FB464 passive crossover for our DCX464 coaxial compression driver. Specifically designed for use in conjunction with the ME464 300Hz horn released in late 2020, users of all types can now have flat high-fidelity response out of the box using 100% OEM components. The FB464 crossover phase aligns the mid and high frequency elements of the DCX464, and implements an asymmetrical slope crossover at 3.6kHz without reducing efficiency. This crossover frequency best balances energy between the two diaphragms for minimum distortion at all output levels. Series protection is additionally provided by industrial filament bulbs which prevent over power or inconsistent tonal balance at very high output.
The FB464 is available in both 8Ω and 16Ω versions to match the impedance of your DCX464 driver. Find specifications, drawings, and measurements on our website’s new dedicated Crossovers section

In the wake of innovation brought about by the wide-bandwidth ring radiator drivers, B&C has now released the ME464 built especially to extract their full capabilities.
B&C's new ME464 is the largest commercially available horn for professional audio. It features a 22” (575mm) wide mouth loading an attached driver to 300Hz, while the 1.4” throat stabilizes a 80° x 60° polar pattern to the upper limit of human hearing.
Made of durable and non-resonant polyurethane, the ME464 can stand up to road use as well as shine in high output arrays in fixed installation. Reduced inter-box interaction and off axis energy from the tight pattern brings immediate benefits to sound quality and clarity, plus the ME464 is the only horn which can support the full frequency response of our DCX464 coaxial driver.A step in the right direction: EU launches European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA) to...
Permanent magnets based on rare earth elements are essential components of many high-tech products and of great importance for the green energy transition. Nevertheless, a large proportion of the respective raw materials currently needs to be imported to meet EU demand. As the main exporter, China dominates and controls the global market. With the launch of the European Raw Materials Alliance, the EU has now taken an important step to address this imbalance. One of the first items on the agenda is securing a sustainable supply of raw materials for the production of rare earth magnets. In this context, the EU project SUSMAGPRO makes an important contribution by developing a recycling supply chain and demonstrating the effective reuse of recycled materials within several industries.
Permanent magnets based on rare earth elements are high-tech products, indispensable in high-performance electric motors, generators and sensors. As functional components in wind turbines, electric and hybrid vehicles and robotics, they play a fundamental role in the transition to a digital, clean energy future. They form the basis for and industry worth more than three trillion US dollar, with a strong upward trend. Experts predict that demand for permanent magnets will grow by 15-20% annually over the next decade.
Despite their name, rare earth elements are by no
means rare; quantities worthy of extraction are known to exist even in Europe. What
worries European industry representatives is Chinese market dominance.
Processing of ores extracted from open-cast mines produces large quantities of
problematic waste such as alkalis, acids and radioactive by-products, and past Chinese
environmental regulations have made unrivalled low-cost production possible.
This resulted in a ruinous worldwide price-war, which forced most competitors
out of the market. However, while the Chinese state is currently undertaking
great efforts to close illegal mines and bring environmental regulations up to
international standards, its long-term investments and the consequent market
development over the last 50 years have made market access for European
companies increasingly difficult. It is worrying that China not only covers the
entire value chain from ore mining to end use, but also combines high
investments in the industry with a cap on mining capacity and export
restrictions in its current five-year plan. China openly describes that turning
raw material advantage into market leadership in key technologies has priority
over the export of raw materials or magnets. Growing political tensions
combined with import duty considerations further increase price volatility and
thus vulnerability of the market.
Considering these developments, it is only logical
that the European Commission has now launched the European Raw Materials Alliance
(ERMA), whose first priority it is to secure raw materials for permanent
magnets. The Alliance plans to increase supply security of magnetic materials
through strategic cooperation with more stable partners such as Canada or
Australia in the extraction and processing of raw materials. Furthermore, it
foresees the support of African countries in establishing sustainable
production and the expansion of cooperation with Latin American countries. In
line with the European Green Deal, the alliance also places a strong focus on
recycling the 20,000 tons of permanent magnets already in the European market. As
Maroš ŠEFČOVIČ, Vice-President of the European Commission for
Interinstitutional Relations, said at the official launch on 29th
September: “The recycling of raw materials from electrical and electronic waste
in urban mining and competitive sustainability are absolutely essential to
reduce dependence on China, and the recycling rate of permanent magnets must be
greatly increased.”
Here, the EU project SUSMAGPRO makes an important
contribution. Whereas previous approaches recover the rare earth elements (REE)
neodymium and dysprosium through complex hydro- or pyrometallurgical processes
and re-alloy them with iron and boron, a shorter recycling process is employed
by the 19 European partners within SUSMAGPRO. The magnet material is embrittled
and pulverised with the aid of hydrogen (HPMS, Hydrogen Processing of Magnetic
Scrap). The powder can then be directly reprocessed into magnets without
splitting it into its individual alloy components, thus saving over 90% of
energy compared to primary production methods and reducing toxicity by as much
as 98%. By 2024, once production maturity is achieved, 110 tons of magnetic
waste will be recycled annually in four pilot plants in Sweden, the UK,
Slovenia and Germany. The project consortium covers the entire recycling chain
from large recycling companies and magnet manufacturers to end users of
traction motors, loudspeakers, wind turbines and heating pumps.
"The difficulty
does not lie in the actual recycling process. The HPMS process for
neodymium-iron-boron magnets is efficient and cost-effective. Unfortunately,
however, there is a wide variety of magnets on the market, e.g. ferrites or
samarium-cobalt magnets, which are difficult to recycle, and the components
containing magnets are not subject to mandatory labelling. Often, dismantling
of components is also more expensive than the raw material value contained in
them, which is why electronic scrap is often shredded," explains project
coordinator Professor Dr Carlo Burkhardt from Pforzheim University. Therefore,
an important task within SUSMAGPRO is the development of sensor technology and
automatic sorting equipment to pre-sort the magnetic waste in a targeted manner
and thus increase process efficiency. SUSMAGPRO is also looking at how to
design new products to increase their recyclability. Burkhardt is confident
that by consistently recycling components with a high magnetic content, i.e.
primarily from wind turbines, electric cars, computer hard drives and pumps, a
recycling rate of 15-25% can be achieved in the medium term.
Burkhardt adds:
"But only if we all work together. Manufacturers, consumers and policy
makers are equally challenged. By creating labelling standards, using
recyclable products and developing new, particularly resource-efficient
value-added chains, we must succeed not only in compensating for the current
local disadvantage, but also in transforming it into an advantage in the medium
term". The foundation of the European Raw Materials Alliance is an
immensely important first step in this direction.
Stay tuned for the
next SUSMAGPRO press release on the topic Design for Recycling.

EU-funded project aims to tackle supply chain insecurity for RE magnets in EuropeAdapted snorkel...
Adapted snorkelling masks, unicorn-costumes, empty plastic bottles…people around the world have come up with a lot of creative ideas on how to address the recent lack of medical face masks. For the wider population, these alternatives may still offer a certain degree of protection. For medical staff dealing with infected patients on a day-to-day basis however, the temporary unavailability of certified equipment constitutes a serious problem.
The current COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated dramatically, how critical supply chain management and the maintenance of a constant flow of supplies is. And this does not just apply to medical equipment. Among others, car manufacturers have also stopped production, as material flows from countries strongly affected by the virus have slowed down. It has become apparent that our global supply chains are vulnerable and can be easily disrupted. In this context, the Horizon 2020 project SUSMAGPRO offers a solution. Within the project, a consortium of 19 European partners from academia and industry, coordinated by Pforzheim University, is working on developing a recycling supply chain for rare earth magnets and demonstrating the effective reuse of recycled material within several industries. The range of products includes motors of electric cars, water pumps, loudspeakers and wind turbines.
Already prior to the current crisis, the EU has created a list of critical raw materials, that are crucial to Europe’s economy and subject to significant supply risks. They are needed to produce everyday goods as well as modern technologies, guarantee job security in various industries and economic well-being, and yet they are not available in abundance. Among these are rare earth elements (REE), used to produce strong magnets, one of the most crucial components in industries such as automotive, aerospace, e-mobility, wind power and consumer goods. These magnets are essential for achieving the green energy transition and digital transformation of industries.
Despite their name, REE are not rare to find in nature, however, they are difficult to extract and mining causes significant environmental damage. Currently, only a fraction of EU demand is also met by EU production, while China is the main producer and exporter worldwide. In addition to mining, further steps of the production process are carried out there, including oxidation and refinement. Given these circumstances, it is questionable if the current REE supply chain can be considered crisis-proof and sustainable.
A crisis has a way of revealing weak spots. This may seem cruel at first, but it also presents an opportunity to re-organise, re-start and improve to create a better future. While we are momentarily facing a health crisis unprecedented in our modern times, we should not forget about climate change, another major challenge humanity is facing. The current standstill provides a huge chance to make a real change in this regard. And the first steps are being taken: In the European Parliament, an alliance has formed calling for a green recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. In addition to various environment ministers, it includes CEOs, business associations, NGOs, thinktanks, civil society groups and trade union representatives. They aim to place the European Green Deal at the heart of Europe’s economic activity, fighting for a green transition after the crisis.
Recycling RE magnets reduces waste, helps to protect the environment and recovers precious resources. On a larger scale, the SUSMAGPRO project shows that with collaboration, dedication and creative ideas, it is possible to develop a system that works for us and the planet and build a more sustainable and resilient future.

On June 3-4, 2019, the first phase of a four-year EU-funded research and innovation project began with a kick-off event in Pforzheim, Germany. The project, called SUSMAGPRO (full title: Sustainable Recovery, Reprocessing and Reuse of Rare-Earth Magnets in a Circular Economy) was granted funding from Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission and consists of 19 project partners (including B&C SPEAKERS) and one associated partner from nine European countries.
The main objective of this project is to develop a recycling supply chain for Rare-Earth magnets in Europe and to demonstrate these new materials on a pilot scale within a range of application sectors. Partners gathered for the first time in Pforzheim in June to discuss their challenges, expectations, and overall management for the project.
SUSMAGPRO’s
overall objective is to develop and demonstrate four novel pilot-plant
solutions for the clean and sustainable recycling of permanent magnets at
Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) 6–7 (technology or system prototype
demonstrated in relevant / operational environment). In doing so, secondary REE
material will be remanufactured into new magnetic products, which will eventually
be displayed in a travelling roadshow in the second half of the project. Such
novel activities will take place over the whole value chain, and solutions
created will enable Europe to gain a better foothold in the worldwide renewable
energy systems (RES) device markets, enabling the future of zero-carbon mobility
and energy.
Europe imports far more NdFeB magnets than it manufactures (>1,000 tonnes manufactured per annum), which puts its industry in a vulnerable position.
The aim of SUSMAGPRO is to identify, separate, reprocess and reuse recycled magnets at a pilot scale with a multidisciplinary team located across Europe, activating a circular economy business model. Instead of dumping this critical resource in landfill sites or exporting our RE-containing waste to other parts of the globe, SUSMAGPRO will use the latest technology to extract the elements from magnets scrap, and will use short-loop circular economy routes to re-integrate the metals into new products for the European market. The project will target main applications including automotive rotors, water pumps, loudspeakers and wind turbines; B&C SPEAKERS will play a key role in the design and assessment of loudspeaker drivers from recycled magnets

New
to the large format coaxial family is the 14CXN88. Like the 12CXN88 and
15CXN88, that were introduced in the spring of 2017, this new 14” addition
features an 88mm voice coil woofer and 75mm diaphragm high frequency driver.
This motor combination offers an excellent balance between HF and LF output. As
a practical compromise between our 12-inch and 15-inch alternatives, the
14CXN88 coaxial (which is actually 13.5-inches in diameter) offers better low
frequency output than a 12-inch coaxial, but more balanced midrange performance
than a 15-inch coaxial

Released at the recent ProLight & Sound show in Frankfurt, Germany, the new B&C Speakers 12CXN88, and 15CXN88, high output coaxial transducers are now shipping! These larger motor alternatives feature a long throw, 88mm (3.5”) voice coil woofer, combined with a 75mm (3”) diaphragm high frequency driver.
“With the success of our 88mm coil NDL series woofers in 2016, making coaxials with an 88mm low frequency coil was a logical progression”, says Alessandro Pancani, Director of Engineering for B&C Speakers. “The 12CXN88 and 15CXN88 offer an excellent balance between HF and LF output, allowing cabinet designers to increase performance without compromise.”
These high sensitivity coax units are rated at 1000w (program power), with an 80° nominal coverage pattern. The shared Neodymium magnet assembly features an aluminum demodulation ring for reduced distortion, a double silicone woofer spider with optimized compliance, a waterproof woofer cone (front side), and a pure titanium high frequency diaphragm.

At the recent ProLight & Sound show in Frankfurt, Germany, B&C introduced the new 18DS115 subwoofer. “This next evolution subwoofer uses a new, longer, four-layer aluminum voice coil.”, says Ron Tizzard, Director of Sales for B&C Speakers. “The result is a very high motor strength without increasing magnet weight and cost which leads to higher sensitivity, lower distortion and better overall performance.”
The 18DS115 features a 40mm long, 4.5 inch diameter (116mm) Copper Clad Aluminum Wire voice coil. With a 1700watt AES power rating, 98db sensitivity, and over 16.5mm of Xmax, this high-energy subwoofer is a significant step forward from similar models in the B&C range. First samples will be available from Italy in early May.

Building on the success of the recently
released 18RBX100 high performance
ferrite subwoofer, B&C Speakers has added a 15” alternative to the RBX
range.
“The RBX
series motor structures were designed from the ground up using creative
industrial design.” says Ron Tizzard, B&C Speakers Director of Sales. “By
making the product easier to manufacture, we were able to invest the savings in
a feature set that significantly outperforms other products in this price
category.”
The 15RBX100
high output subwoofer features a 25mm high, 4” (100mm) diameter copper wire
voice coil that is combined with a laminated double silicone spider, water
resistant curvilinear cone, and triple roll surround - for even more excursion
and linearity. The corrosion resistant motor structure incorporates an aluminum
demodulation ring that effectively controls inductive rise as well as harmonic
and intermodulation distortion. This subwoofer can be used for a wide variety
of applications, including compact vented enclosures as small as 80 Litres.

The new MBX Series, available in 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch, is an ideal solution for two way systems and excellent choice for multi-driver applications. These woofers offer an excellent balance between low and mid frequency reproduction, with high sensitivity for reduced amplifier current requirements. These woofers all feature a neodymium ring magnet, copper clad aluminum voice coil wire, ventilated voice coil gap, and an aluminum demodulation ring.
A lightweight moving mass provides fast transient attack while our specially treated surround and spider damp distortion-inducing resonances quickly. This series also introduces a new hydrophobic cone treatment, offering extreme weather protection without increased moving mass. Current models include the 6MBX44, 8MBX51, and 10MBX64.

B&C speakers are pleased to announce the appointment of Blue Aran as the exclusive distributor of B&C components in the United Kingdom.
Based in Southampton, Blue Aran made live stock a key part in their early business development strategy. The goal was to give customers the confidence to order, knowing that their purchase would be delivered straight away. Over the years this has proved invaluable, particularly as they are now catering to OEM manufacturers, repair agents, and audio dealers, who all need quick and reliable supply.
“The market has evolved significantly in the last 10 years. The Internet has changed the way the transducer industry is supplied, and we felt that the time was right for a change in representation.” said Ron Tizzard, Director of Sales for B&C Speakers. “Blue Aran have a dedicated staff, who collectively have many years of experience on the transducer side of the audio industry, and will be in a great position to support our brand, and our customers.”
"I am delighted to have the opportunity to represent such a prestigious brand, and I am confident we are the ideal choice to ensure future growth for the B&C speakers brand in the UK market.", commented Andy Kos, Blue Aran Managing Director.

B&C has added a few new members to their woofer family, with the addition of the MBX series. This new range is designed as a general-purpose woofer, well suited to application in two-way, point source systems. The MBX Series offer an excellent balance between low and mid frequency reproduction, with higher sensitivity than current, similar alternatives.
“As full range enclosure sizes continue to shrink, the MBX series were a logical addition to our line”, says Ron Tizzard, Director of Sales for B&C Speakers. “We already have significant demand for this type of woofer from our OEM partners, so bringing them to the general market was an obvious next step”.
The MBX series feature a neodymium ring magnet,
copper clad aluminum wire voice coil wire, ventilated voice coil gap, and an
aluminum demodulation ring that reduces distortion. Current models include the

B&C is now shipping the DE110 mini high frequency driver. At just 60mm in diameter, this driver is especially appropriate for any application where size and/or weight are an issue.
“With more and more of our OEM customers utilizing multi-driver horns, or combinations of small format woofers and high frequency drivers in line array columns, there was a clear demand for a high quality mini driver.”, said Ron Tizzard, Director of Sales for B&C Speakers SpA.
The 1” exit DE110 features a 36mm, high temperature polymer diaphragm with unique ribs that smooth the frequency response above 8,000Hz, resulting in very flat response curve from 2,000-18,000Hz. Even with this small footprint, the DE110 is rated for a respectable 50 watts of program power, 25% more than the previous generation offered by B&C.

B&C Speakers has recently officially released the updated range of 75mm (3") voice coil high frequency drivers. These drivers feature a robust titanium diaphragm that incorporates next generation surround geometry, together with a brand new, optimized phase plug. Significant research has yielded a new coil former that solidifies the diaphragm with negligible increase in mass. The result is improved high frequency linearity and reduced distortion. The 1.4” exit DE90TN (ferrite), DE880TN and DE980TN (both neodymium) represent an excellent solution for two way point source enclosures, as well as for mounting a waveguide horn in multi-driver line array systems. Also available is the 2” exit DE985TN (neodymium).
Also new are the DE14 and DE14TN, the next evolution of the industry standard DE12, 1"exit ferrite magnet high frequency driver. This 44mm (1.7”) diaphragm driver now features an optimized phase plug and rear cap that improve frequency response with lower distortion. Finally, the new DE254TN, 44mm (1.7”) voice coil, titanium diaphragm high frequency driver offers an excellent value in a 1.4" exit driver.
All new high frequency driver models are now in production.

During 2011, we have spent a lot of time updating our product range, beginning with many new woofer models. Our goal was to create a complete range of interchangeable neodymium and ferrite models, offering maximum application flexibility. You will note the following similar models between these woofer product ranges.
NW / NDL <==> FW Series
SW <==> TBW Series
NBX <==> TBX Series
We have also added a variety of new high frequency drivers, including updated versions of our more recent 3" and 4" diaphragm models. These feature new diaphragm geometries that flatten the frequency response above 10kHz, and significantly improve their waterfall response curves. The 3" diaphragm models now feature a unique, multi-piece phase plug that has been specifically designed to take full advantage of our new diaphragm designs. While the new price list shows only the basic models for now, we will eventually offer updated versions of all recent 3" and 4" diaphragm models.
We have also enhanced our range of ferrite coaxial models. New to the range are 5" and 6.5" models. We have also have a newly updated 8" model. There are also several new single magnet 12" and 15" coax models. These compact and light weight drivers offer cost effective alternatives to our successful range of single magnet neodymium models. Though we only show a limited number of configurations at this time, most of these new coaxial models will be available with or without horns.
Most of the new models are now available in sample quantities, and will be ready for production in the very near future, if they are not already in production. Exceptions include new 3" diaphragm high frequency drivers and the 8" ferrite coaxial models. These should be ready some time in July.
We will soon start to put together our 2013 product catalogue. These should be available later this summer. At that time, we will be eliminating some of the older models from the standard product range. Most of the older models will still be available on a special order basis, however they will be removed from the catalogue, and moved to the archive section of our web site.
